|
| The Tarkine is a vast area (370 000 ha) in the north-west
of Tasmania. It contains the largest tract of temperate rainforest in Australia, a geologically stunning coast and an abundance of wildlife. The Tarkine forest is in fact one of the last temperate rainforests on Earth. The Tarkine is also the land where aboriginal people used to live in harmony with this wild nature. Numerous middens and rock carvings give this area a significant archeological importance. Unfortunately, the Tarkine is not protected. Mining and logging interests
are slowly making their way into one of the last ancient forests
on earth. The beautiful coast is also under pressure from careless
four-wheel-driving and cattle grazing. Most of the following images were shot during a 10 day period in November 2003. Some of them are featured in the book Tarkine, sponsored by WWF Australia. You can buy the book online on the WWF web site. More information about the Tarkine here www.tarkine.org and here www.wwf.org.au. |
